Custom Mojo Mofo Bass Special | Short Scale 4-String Bass | 24-Frets 25.5″-Scale | Vintage-voiced Overwound Pickups + Series / Parallel Mini-Switch | Fully Copper Foil Shielded | Weathered Wino RedI’m hesitant to sell this bass. It’s extremely fun to play & super portable with a deep, authoritative voice. If you heard this bass and didn’t see it, you wouldn’t believe a hilariously small bass could bring the thunder like it does!It’s counter-intuitive but short-scale basses can definitely sound deeper and fuller than a normal 34″-scale bass in some cases. I used to have a heavily modified late 60’s Gibson EB-0 30″-scale bass that I likened to a sawed-off shotgun cuz it was one mean mofo. This one’s definitely got some mad mojo. That’s how I ended up calling it the Mojo Mofo!It’s got a surprising combination of features making it very versatile. Number one is having a 25.5″-scale length, the same as a Strat or a Tele. That’s as easy of a transition as possible for non bass playing guitar players looking to dabble or record some bass tracks. And it has 24-frets! That’s a crazy combination!It’s size makes it a convenient travel instrument. It being so fun to play is a bonus in this area as well!It’s a great platform to experiment with tunings, string gauges & materials (flats, nylon tape-wounds). You can deviate from EADG standard in either direction, but consider string gauge, string tension and intonation range. Right now, I have it tuned down 1.5 steps to C#F#BE and it does the Sabbath thing well. The string tension is just fine with the current strings. I’m certain that you could put a set of 20-52 gauge Piccolo Bass strings and tune it up an octave if you like the feel of bass, but want to solo or record at guitar octave. I’m betting you could even put on some lighter Tenor Guitar strings and tune up even higher to DGBE. Your imagination and tolerance for experimentation are your bounds, be they wide or tight, it’s all up to you. There is no ‘wrong’. It’s a matter of what works for you.The pickups came out of an early SX bass, are vintage-voiced, slightly overwound & are pretty sweet. Flipping the mini-toggle switch to run them in series effectively combines them into one fat humbucker and alters the voice, shifts the mids a bit to give it more P-Bass punch vs Jazz Bass growl and slightly increases the output. I like to have contrasting tones available in a single instrument. Especially unexpected or uncharacteristic voicings for the type of instrument it is.Miscellaneous details: The body and neck were rough to the touch, not finely sanded or sealed when I got it. The current finish is worn in and well weathered. It’s lightly finished in Tru-Oil. It could be gently sanded and finished some other way without completely removing the current coloring or character, if one so desired. Some tinted stain could be added to change it up by darkening the edges or lightening the center into different types of bursts. Or reverse bursts with a dark center & light edges are a thing too! There are many ways you could put your own signature on it. Just sayin…There are no sharp fret edges. The pickup cavities and control cavity are fully shielded with copper foil tape. I can likely locate the truss-rod cover or make one before shipment if that matters to you. It weighs ~5lbs 5 oz and due to its size, will easily fit a regular guitar-sized gig-bag.This lil bass is a bundle of potential energy waiting to be unleashed! Alternatively, it’s well worth investing a little time, acquiring a few tools and learning to do pro-level setups yourself.
